Over the Easter holidays Year 4 pupils received a mysterious letter in the post containing a picture and a challenge for them to respond creatively to the picture using their imagination (which, in Year 4, we’re certainly not short of!)

The children came into school for the first day back eager to show off their interpretations of the picture, which were wide ranging and thoughtful.

This is a postcard written from the point of view of a fisherman on a boat in the picture to his ‘dear wife’:

A super collage inspired by Hokusai’s picture.

This letter, which arrived washed up in a bottle, was from a stranded sister: letter

One pupil collected driftwood at Dawlish, which he thought could be remnants of one of the fishing boats in the picture!

This clay model of the wave as a monster reaching out to ‘get’ the boat reflects how threatening the wave might seem if you were out at sea.

This poem saw a ghostly figure in the clouds of the picture and described this figure as the ‘guardian of the mountain’:

The picture is ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ by Katsushika Hokusai and will serve as the starting point for our creative topic this term. Lots of the children have already found out interesting information about it. For example, at the time Hokusai made the first prints, a copy would have sold for the same price as a serving of noodles!
