Year 1’s Walk on the Wild Side!

We were lucky enough to have a visitor Jack bring in a whole host of interesting creatures for us to look at and touch. We were very gentle and asked some great questions.
We learnt that the hissing cockroach from Madagascar does a very important job of clearing up all the rubbish on the jungle and forest floor. Most of us were surprised to find it felt smooth not sticky or slimy. The bearded dragon from Australia was rougher and was covered with scales that camouflaged it amazingly well. It arrived in its box with a hot water bottle to keep it warm in our colder climate! Twitter, the white faced owl came from Africa, like the giant snail, and had enormous orange eyes to help it see in the dark. Jack explained that it could turn its head around more easily than we can because it can’t move its eyes from side to side. Tyke the chinchilla was nocturnal like the owl, and had a thick furry coat to help it keep warm in its native Andes mountains.
We had a wonderful morning looking at, learning about and feeling the animals. What a great start to our Carnival of the Animals theme! Thank you Jack for talking to us and bringing your fabulous friends.
